About Membership at First Presbyterian Church
Are you interested in membership at First Pres? As a member you may vote at congregational meetings. You are eligible to be selected as an elder or deacon, (thereby becoming eligible to serve Communion). You may also serve on the nominating committee. The steps involved are:
- Let us know of your interest! Contact Rev. Garry, the church office, any elder, deacon, usher or greeter. You can also indicate your interest on the Visitor cards found in the pews. Place the card in an offering plate as they are passed.
- Schedule a pastoral visit with Rev. Garry and a church member. These are done at your convenience either at your home or at church. Plan on an hour.
- Determine the membership path that fits your situation. The constitution of the Presbyterian Church (USA) allows for three methods: affirmation of faith, reaffirmation of faith, or letter of transfer. If a letter of transfer from another congregation is appropriate, you need to write to the congregation where you are currently a member and request a transfer. Most congregations are very co-operative, although the process can take a bit of time. Don't worry, we can help you with sample letters. Baptism is a pre-requisite for membership, but can be performed when you join.
- Choose a church member to sponsor you. This person can guide you, help you learn about activities. If you ever have questions about our church, they will be able to assist you.
- Select a Sunday that is convenient for you, your sponsor and the worship calendar. You will be called up front during worship. If you need to be baptised, that ceremony will occur first. We mark your forehead with the sign of the cross using water from the baptism fount. Your sponsor will introduce you, then you will be asked a few questions about your beliefs. After a prayer, you will be welcomed as a member of our congregation!
If you are not ready to formalize your membership, there are still multitudes of ways to serve others. You may choose to usher, be a lay reader, make food for Fellowship Hour, sing in the choir, ring handbells, play an instrumental solo. You can volunteer time at the Watertown Urban Mission either unpacking items for sale in the thrift store, or working in the food pantry.
